Hojicha Macchiato Japanese Beverage (Printer-friendly)

Roasted green tea meets creamy steamed milk in this soothing Japanese beverage. Ready in 10 minutes.

# What You'll Need:

→ Tea Base

01 - 1 1/2 teaspoons hojicha loose leaf tea or 1 hojicha tea bag
02 - 2/3 cup hot water (195°F)

→ Milk

03 - 2–3 tablespoons whole milk or oat milk

# How To Make It:

01 - Heat water to 195°F. Place hojicha tea leaves or tea bag in a teapot or mug.
02 - Pour hot water over the tea and steep for 2–3 minutes. Remove the leaves or tea bag.
03 - Steam the milk using a milk frother, steam wand, or by heating and whisking until frothy.
04 - Pour the brewed hojicha into an espresso cup or demitasse.
05 - Spoon steamed milk foam directly onto the center of the tea, creating a macchiato dot.
06 - Serve immediately.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The natural roasted notes of hojicha create this incredibly comforting, almost caramel-like flavor that needs absolutely no sweetener to feel indulgent
  • It comes together in ten minutes flat but feels like something you would order at a specialty café
02 -
  • I learned the hard way that boiling water actually burns hojicha and makes it taste bitter, so please stick to that 90°C sweet spot
  • The milk foam needs to be thick enough to hold its shape when spooned onto the tea, or it will just disappear into the liquid
03 -
  • If you can only find hojicha tea bags, use two bags instead of one to get that robust roasted flavor to stand up to the milk
  • A spoon held at an angle while pouring the milk foam helps create that perfect circular macchiato mark on top
